Wild Inside

How Nature Protects Your Child's Mental Health and Restores Yours

Helping you find the courage to raise children who can weather what’s ahead — with nature as their guide.

Wild Inside is a call to disrupt everything modern parenting culture has taught us to normalize. This is not another manual for behavior management or quick-fix solutions — it’s a bold reclamation of what children (and parents) truly need: nature, connection, and deep relational and generational healing. Blending evocative storytelling with groundbreaking neurobiology and trauma research, Wild Inside exposes how disconnection — from ourselves, from our children, from the land, and from our senses — has subtly shaped generations.

It offers a revolutionary alternative: relational regulation, ecoception, and NatureLed™ development. For parents healing from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or recovering from toxic stress while raising the next generation, this book is both a mirror and a roadmap. Wild Inside is poised to change not just conversations around parenting, but the very nervous system of our culture.

"Kathleen Lockyer is a hero of mine, bringing a gentle, persistent, beautiful voice to the new nature movement. The title of the book is itself eloquent. The child (and adult) in communion with nature is filled with something difficult to explain, but Kathleen guides the reader, as she does so many parents and children, into that outer and inner world. Which is why connecting children to the natural world is a sacred cause."

A Parenting Book For The Rest of Us

Wild Inside is for the parent who’s tired of rigid strategies, exhausted by behavior charts, and overwhelmed by advice that doesn’t honor the heart and soul of parenting. Wild Inside won’t bury you in jargon or make you feel like you’re failing. Instead, it offers something rare: relief.

Grounded in the latest neuroscience and child development research—yet written with heart, humility, and poetic clarity—Wild Inside helps you understand the most essential aspects of childhood so you can stop second-guessing yourself and start trusting what you already know.

Build resilience by working with, not against, our evolutionary wiring

Improve physical and mental health outcomes—naturally

Reconnect to the wild intelligence within, and help others do the same.

What if your most powerful parenting hack…

was just outside your door?

Inside, you’ll learn how to: Recognize the hidden roots of dysregulation (in you and your child) - Support your child’s sensory and emotional development naturally - Connect with nature for healing and growth - Anchor in relational connection - Raise resilient, regulated, and nature-positive kids — while healing your own story.

After reading Wild Inside, you’ll breathe easier — knowing that parenting doesn’t have to be so complicated, and that the most powerful supports are within you, and all around you.

Step Outside Your Door And Discover Your Neural-Nature Networks For A Better Today, and A Brighter Tomorrow!

Here’s what lies ahead:

- Stronger Bonds: Nature-connected moments weave trust back into your relationship. Instead of constant effort and battles, you’ll find yourself relating with ease, watching your child lean in instead of pulling away.

- Calmer Days, Calmer Nights:  The nervous system is waiting to attune to nature, together. When sensory pathways to nature open, it soothes your child’s stress and reduces yours. Tantrums shift, evenings soften, and bedtime doesn’t feel like a constant battle.

- Confidence You Can Feel: When you understand the sensory and evolutionary roots of behavior, you stop doubting yourself. You’ll know why your spirited child reacts the way they do—and you’ll know how to meet them with clarity, not confusion.

- More Ease, Less Overwhelm: Say goodbye to searching for answers. Nature simplifies family life, making parenting more intuitive and deeply effective.

- Roots That Last a Lifetime: What begins as simple practices will grow into resilience, belonging, and joy that your child carries long after childhood—and that you carry, too.

Kathleen Lockyer

I wrote Wild Inside because I’ve lived the question so many parents are asking:

What’s missing from the way we’re trying to raise, regulate, and connect with our kids?

For years I watched parents—myself included—pour themselves into endless strategies and expert advice, only to feel like something essential was still out of reach. At the same time, I began to notice what happened when families stepped outside: children softened, curiosity returned, nervous systems found their rhythm again. Parents, too, felt lighter, calmer, and more like themselves.

That’s what shaped this book: the understanding that disconnection our children are facing today isn’t only from nature. It’s from their bodies, their senses, their communities, and the very pathways that build resilience.

Wild Inside is an invitation to return to the wisdom you already carry—supported by research, shaped by lived experience, and rooted in our deepest neurobiological needs.

My hope is simple: that my 30 years of distilling vital information and real stories will make your parenting path a little bit easier—and help you remember what parenting is truly about—real connection, healing that lives in the body, and a relationship with nature that steadies us all.

This is how we raise stronger kids.
This is how we restore ourselves.
This is how we come home—inside and out.
